For many years young people born in our towns have struggled for the means to live here as housing and other costs have risen. The cost of housing is a difficult problem as our area is attractive to folks from New York City; thus we are part of the housing market of the most expensive real estate in the country. Our towns and the county should establish a task force to develop strategies for making affordable housing available for those young families and individuals, and the elderly, who have grown up here but find it difficult to afford a home in this real estate market. I believe part of the solution will be the construction of new, modest but efficient and affordable homes in and around our hamlets and villages. Who builds them, how they are financed and who qualifies to live in them are all issues that would be on the table, but I think it is important for sustaining local culture and tradition that we embrace this concept.
